Looking Forward to Salomé Quartet 18 February 2024

Cowal Music Club is especially looking forward to its next concert this Sunday afternoon, February 18th,  at 2.30pm in Dunoon’s Burgh Hall, when the Salome String Quartet, winners of the UK 2023 Tunnell Trust award,  will perform.

This young quartet, Haim Choi & Coco Inman (violins), Kasia Ziminska (viola), and Shizuku Tatsono (cello), were recently described by ‘The Strad’ magazine as “strikingly intelligent and expressive”, and are already known for their expressive interpretations and wonderful sense of communication.

Formed in 2016 as 4 prizewinning students at London’s Royal College of Music (RCM), the quartet members come from South Korea, Japan and England, and have already been remarkably active and successful internationally, having performed at Vienna’s Musikverein, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Warsaw, Tel Aviv Opera House, and prestigious London venues including the Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre, and the Royal Albert Hall.

In 2017 the quartet won the RCM String Quartet competition as well as the Sacconi Quartet Prize and the Just & Cornell prize, - an impressive track record for its first 12 months working together. They have recently been invited to take part in festivals across the UK, including the Wye Valley Festival, Chiltern Arts Festival and the Highgate International Chamber Music Festival, and engagements this season include appearances at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Conway Hall and Bayle Music.

Haim Choi, South Korean but German-born, who leads the quartet, has recently been appointed Cultural Ambassador of UNESCO Korea, and teaches at the Yehudi Menuhin School(YMS) (where she herself was a former student). Cellist Shizuku Tatsono was also a student there (at YMS).

Audiences attending concerts during the quartet’s current Scottish tour including Dunoon will be treated to fascinating performances of quartets by both Mendelssohns – Felix (the famous name) and his lesser known sibling, Fanny, as well as Schostakovitch’s impressive Quartet no 3 in F major.
